In my Third Year Spring 2021 semester, Professor Mark O’Bryan tasked us with designing a spacious home in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, nestled within the Great Smoky Mountains. Throughout the semester, I delved into the intricacies of architecture, exploring how it can evoke emotional responses by creating order in the physical world. The design prioritizes a seamless integration with the natural environment, offering inhabitants a serene retreat immersed in the breathtaking beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. With large floor-to-ceiling windows strategically positioned to capture the surrounding vistas, the house invites occupants to forge a deeper connection with nature. Careful consideration was given to optimizing natural light and shade, with permanent exterior shades meticulously angled to provide comfort throughout the day. Additionally, the master bedroom, located on the ground floor, boasts its own living space, ensuring a cozy haven for relaxation and contemplation. Overall, the design reflects a harmonious blend of function and aesthetics, where architecture becomes a conduit for experiencing and appreciating the captivating essence of the natural world.
